Socotra just might be the weirdest place on earth. Situated in the Indian Ocean 250 km from Somalia and 340 km from Yemen, Socotra Island (part of a group of four islands) was geographically isolated from mainland Africa for many eons. The island is about 3,650 square km and has a few smaller islands around it that are mostly uninhabited. On 2008 it was recognized as a world natural heritage location. |
