WILSON'S BIRD OF PARADISE!

Meet the Wilson's Bird of Paradise. These birds are small, only 1.86 to 2.36 ounces, with wing spans of around 3 inches and a length of about 8.25 inches when including their curlicue tail feathers. The male is a red and black bird of paradise with a yellow mantle on its neck, light green mouth, rich blue feet and two curved violet tail feathers. The head is naked blue with black double cross pattern on it. The female is a brownish bird with bare blue crown.       The male sports more colors than any other bird in the paradise family. In the field, the blue bare skin on the crown of the bird's head is so vivid that it is clearly visible by night, the deep scarlet back and velvet green breast are lush, and the curlicue tail shimmers and gleams a bright silver.       The Wilson's bird of paradise lives only on the islands of Batanta and Waigeo which are located off the northern coast of West Papua, Indonesia. They are not endangered, but due to its confined range and habitat loss, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species ranks this species as 'Near Threatened.'

The males will mate with multiple
females at a time. Alluring the female
with an intricate dance routine.

By fluffing his plumage, he becomes a
'brilliant disc of green,' and his mouth
opens to a fluorescent vibrancy. He then
becomes, literally, a beacon of color to her.
