SHANGRALA'S
GREAT
EARED
NIGHTJAR!
The great eared nightjar is the largest species of nightjar, reaching
up to 41 centimeters or 1 foot, 4 2/8 inches. It inhabits forests,
forest edges, and fields and plains with some tree cover. It is found
in India, Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Laos, mainland China,
Thailand and Vietnam.
Like other nightjars, they are active at dusk and at night. Unique, feline-looking nightjar. Distinct ears and frequently erect posture distinguish it from many other nightjars. Plumage consists of complex shades of browns, which can vanish into the background when perched. Noticeably long-tailed in flight. Some say it looks like a dragon, others say a snake, while it has been mistaken for a cat in a tree. The rare bird was discovered In Assam's Kakopathar. According to The Sentinel, locals there couldn't ascertain when the bird arrived in their village and settled in a tree. One man who saw and rescued the bird said that when he first saw it, he mistook it for a cat. But as soon as he got close to it, he realized that it was a bird. |
