Hearst Castle in San Luis Obispo County stands as an architectural gem
among the coastal hills. This national and California state landmark is
known for both its refined beauty and idyllic location.
William Randolph Hearst founded the nation's leading newspaper chain, and
with his wealth, built a true American castle upon a 250,000 acre estate
that was originally purchased by his ancestors in 1856. The ornate mansion's
design and construction began in 1919, with architect Julia Morgan leading
the project and continued for another 28 years, finally ending in 1947.
Hearst died in 1951 and the castle has been owned by the state of California
since the 1958 donation by the Hearst Corporation.
Stars like Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo, and Clark Gable, as well as leaders
such as Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, all flocked to the estate
for lavish dinners and days of respite. With a theater, private zoo, lush
gardens, and art sculptures throughout the property, a stay at Magnificent Hearst Castle
was more luxurious than at the state's finest resorts. The castle has 165 rooms and
127 acres of pristinely manicured landscapes.
Visitor's now can tour its grand halls and take in all the sights of the 20th
century's golden age.

Hearst Castle Has Extravagant Swimming Pools...
In addition to the castle itself, the tours show off the incredible swimming pools.
The Neptune Pool (outside) is surrounded by marble columns and holds 345,000
gallons of water.
Hidden under the tennis courts the lavish Roman Pool has walls
and beams covered in blue glass and gold leaf tiles with smaller marble statues
and lamp posts around the walkway.
Like the rest of the property, the pools are awe-inspiring.
