SHANGRALA'S
BEST
OF
NATIONAL
GEOGRAPHIC 6!
Discovering The Hidden Face Of Yucatan - Guillaume Nery. Cenotes are deep
pits of crystal-clear water that are normally found in Central America. The
Ancient Maya considered them to be sacred. This photograph shows a free-diver
rejoining a cenote's surface using the sun's rays as a guide.
The Shepherd From Transylvania - Eduard Gutescu. High in the Carpathian Mountains,
the photographer met a shepherd named Nea Dan. He remarked how wonderful it was to
hear his life story.
emBEARassed - Taylor Thomas Albright. A brown bear is captured in the midst
of a short tumble while fishing in this photograph. It was during the annual
Alaskan salmon run. The bear reached out a little too far and lost his
footing, only to recover uninjured and continue fishing from the same spot a
few moments later.
Third Place, Wildlife: A New Look - Alison Langevad. These white rhinos were
captured late at night drinking from a watering hole in the Zimanga Game
Reserve. Note how they don't have horns - they were dehorned by rangers in
order to deter poaches from killing them. The photographer remarked that he
underestimated the emotional impact that these great animals would have on him.
People's Choice: Mid Shed - Mike Dexter. Unlike snakes, chameleons shed
their skin in bits and pieces rather than a whole. This flap-necked chameleon
was photographed tentatively making its way across an open sandy area, putting
itself at risk from predators. The photographer decided to shoot the creature
at its level, so he chose to lay down to capture this shot.
Spa Time! - Nilesh Shah. A herd of elephants stops for a rest from the
scorching heat and dry winds. Elephants use dust baths to cool themselves
down, as well as keep mosquitoes and other blood-sucking insects at bay.
Night Statics - Hernando Alonso Rivera Cervantes. Colima is the most active
volcano in Mexico, and this crystal-clear photo was captured on a cold
winter's night.

Owen Humphreys/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest. A raging sea dwarfs
Seaham Lighthouse in County Durham in England, with 100 ft waves after a cold
front moved down from the north bringing freezing temperatures to the North
of England.
Jayesh Mehta/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest. A group of 12-14
hyenas were chasing a herd of 7-8 elephants. The elephant herd included 2
adult females, a few teenagers, and a baby that was a few days old
(belonging to one of the adult females). The hyenas were trying to get at
the baby. In this picture, the mother is kicking at the hyenas.
Graham McGeorge/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest. Masters of disguise.
The Eastern Screech Owl is seen here doing what they do best. You better have a
sharp eye to spot these little birds of prey.
Mary Ellen Urbanski/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest. I have seen
alligators and turtles together in ponds before, but never like this! I was
at Bluebill Pond in Harris Neck NWR when I saw what I thought was an
alligator sunning itself on a stump. As I got closer I realized that it was
actually perched on the back of a turtle! I wish I had been there to witness
how this surprising esprit de corps had came to pass!
Brad Lenear/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest. I took this
photograph near the spillway of Jordan lake dam shortly after the Osprey
returned to my area for the 2013 season. Early in the spring, you can
find them fishing at the base of the dam. I love photographing wildlife,
but have a special place in my heart for any type of raptor.
Graham McGeorge/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest. Bonobos... the
unknown Ape. Most people do not even know what Bonobos are. I have been
documenting their behavior for over 4 years now at the Jacksonville
Zoo here in Florida and all I can say is this: "Minutes turn to hours when I
am photographing Bonobos. I love to watch their mannerisms and interactions
with each other. They are without a doubt our closest relative. It is my
dream to one day get a chance to photograph them in the wild in their own
world in the DRC."
