Coober Pedy is a small town in the Outback of Southern Australia. Originally an
opal mining town, many of Coober Pedy's residents live underground to escape the
region's immense heat. Homes, dive bars, a church, and more can be found buried
underground in what the locals call 'dugouts.'
This remote South Australian town takes its name from the Aboriginal words
'kupa-piti,' meaning 'whitefella hole.' And that's accurate - the township is
full of holes dug by eager white fellas. In fact, most of the town still lives
in those holes.

Temperatures get over 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in the Summer
with very cold nights.
In Coober Pedy you have to be careful where you're going. You can see warning
signs like these everywhere.
It's because you can see holes like these everywhere.
In 1915 they found a rare ruby gem Opal in this area. Now there are more than
70 fields of Opal. That's why it's called "The world's capital of Opal".
This could have been like one of many mining cities.
But this makes you wonder, what's underneath?
Several years ago, the miners found a genius solution to the extreme heat outside:
to build everything underground. And that was also the easiest way to get to work.
In these underground homes, the temperature is comfortable. An average apartment
like this contains two bedrooms, kitchen, living room and bath room. The stone
walls were painted to prevent dust coming off them.

They have a beautiful church,
A fine Jewelry store,
And a large selection in their book store.
You can relax in their underground pub with a cold beer...
and shoot pool if you want to.
Most of the town's residents continue to build and live underground. The name
of the town, Coober Pedy, comes from the aboriginal term "Kupa Pit", which means
"Cave of a white man".
There are also a number of above ground attractions too. You can play 9 holes of golf.
Because of the hot temperatures during the day, though, it's better to play golf at night.
The Coober Pedy golf club has a cooperation with the famous Scottish golf club Saint
Andrews, also known as "home of golf".
You can also see this unique spacecraft from the 2000 American science fiction
action horror film 'Pitch black'.
Of course, you can always enjoy the remarkable desert view while there too.
